November 20 - December 1 We have been busy the last couple of weeks of November! Here is a look at some of our explorations, tasks and adventures.  Literacy -  We have continued to examine long vowel teams and have covered - ee /ē/ : beef, street, ea /ē/: stream, dream,   ey /ē/  : monkey oa /ō/: oat, boat,  ow /ō/: grow, tow,   oe /ō/ toe, rope Included in this literacy work is our focus on our high frequency words. Here are the last two lists we have worked through -    ask went men read need land different home us move     try kind hand picture again change off play spell air    Passages, read and rolls and high frequency words will be coming home in yellow literacy folders every week.   November 15-17th It was great to be back together after a restful fall break. Here is a look at a few components of our week- Literacy: This week we continued working on the following high frequency words from last week. Students should be able to read these words, say/write them in a complete sentence and spell the words correctly.   well large must big even such because turn here why In our phonics work we focussed on vowel teams and how if two vowels "walk together" the first vowel says its name. This week we concentrated on /ai/ - train, paint  and /ay/ today, may Math: This week we focused on place value : the value of a digit in a number. We also looked at how to represent numbers using base ten blocks and practiced representing the values of numbers. We then applied all of the skills and  understandings we have been working on the last couple of weeks to a counting collections task.   November 6-8th  This week we spent time learning about and honoring National Indigenous Veterans Day and Remembrance Day. We learned about the significance of the poppy through John McCrae's  famous poem - "In Flanders Field" and the book - A Poppy is to Remember by Heather Patterson. We also spent time learning about the roles animals played in the military and continue to play today. We spent time creating a wreath of tissue paper poppies to signify our commitment to honor these important events and to show our dedication to peace. As a school, we took part in a very meaningful Remembrance Day assembly which was hosted by our grade 5/6 classes.  This week we also continued our look at numbers and how we could demonstrate our understanding of even and odd numbers.   October 30 - November 3rd It was a spooktacular week! Here are a few highlights: Our week started with a day full of pumpkins, thanks to our parent council,  we were gifted with individual small pumpkins for our day filled with inquiry. Our focus began looking at descriptive words connected to our senses and in small groups we spent time generating lists of adjectives about our pumpkins. Next steps in our pumpkin inquiry were to determine ways to measure our pumpkins. Students used blocks and chain links to measure the height and circumference of their pumpkins, used digital scale to determine how much their pumpkins weighed in addition to a balancing scale to compare their pumpkin to others as well as other materials. From there our next steps were to plan how we wanted to decorate our pumpkins and then dove into creating pumpkin art with our older buddies!   October 23- 27th  We had a cold and snowy week but welcomed the weather as we were very excited to get out and play and learn in the snow! Here is a look at our our adventures:  Science - We have been learning about our earth and spent time looking at topographical maps of the World, Canada and Alberta and asking ourselves What do you know? What do you wonder? Students began to recognize that different colors on these maps represented land, water and landforms. From there we moved to look at different land forms and bodies of water on earth. We spent time matching vocabulary and pictures to help us become more proficient at identifying landforms. From there we narrowed our focus to landforms in Alberta. Our next step was to build representations of land forms using paper to document their understanding of landforms and bodies of water in Alberta.
