October 19th - 22nd    Our week may have been short but sure was packed with lots of wonderful discovery, adventure and exploration.  Here are some highlights of our week together! Walking Field Trip: Our walking field trips have been a highlight of our adventures and this week did not disappoint. We headed out with a plan to look for evidence of animals/birds in our community and to see how they are adapting to our seasonal changes. Along with this focus we planned on incorporating our school focus of "Walking for Wenjack" to continue educating and taking steps towards reconciliation. This plan was quickly changed when we were gifted with the opportunity to watch a great horned owl in the community arena. As we watched this majestic bird, students shared information they already knew about these owls, as well many wonderings they had.   October 12th - 15th This week one of our focuses was to introduce the Fab 4 Reciprocal Reading strategies to students.  Reciprocal teaching is a scaffolded, or supported, discussion technique that incorporates four main strategies—predicting, questioning, clarifying, summarizing—that good readers use together to comprehend text. We started our focus on predicting by modelling to students how to use pictures to make realistic predictions based on the evidence from the book. This modelling included using the following sentence frame to assist students with developing their predictions: I think this will happen because..  Together we read several books where students were asked to formulate predictions of what was going to happen in the story based on the evidence (pictures) from the text and decide whether their predictions were realistic. We will continue this work throughout the year as we work to build on our reading strategies.  I can show value to the community and groups to which

October 4-7th I can show respect and kindness to others. I can show care for myself and my learning. I can share personal reflections. I can demonstrate  and recognize healthy interactions and be mindful.  This week we focused on the term Gratitude - what it meant to us, how we can can recognize it, how we feel when we feel grateful, ways to show gratitude and those people/things/places/experiences we were grateful for. We read a number of wonderful books as springboards to our discussions. These books included, Tiny Perfect things by M.H Clark, Thankful by Elaine Vickers and the Grateful Book by Angela Kohler. As we read through these books we began to wonder how we could show gratitude for all that the Earth had been providing us in regards to the collections of fall evidence that we had been collecting and documenting. We learned that the Indigenous ways of showing gratitude include only taking what we need and always honoring mother earth for what it has provided for us. Next ste

September 27th - October 1 We are all very proud of the grade 1 and 2 students in both classes who worked so hard learning about Residential Schools, Orange Shirt Day, and Reconciliation and then sharing their learning with the rest of the school via a virtual assembly.   Literacy: We have added the letters 'E and 'H this week.  Throughout our letter work, grade 1 students have been focusing on letter names, letter sounds, correct letter formation while printing, and beginning to sound out simple cvc (consonant, vowel, consonant) words.  In grade 2, students have been focusing on mastery of letter formation, blending/segmenting of cvc words, and writing grammatically correct, simple sentences.   I Can Tell About the Changes in the Seasons / I Can Find Out and Think About How I Am Connected to My World/I Can Sort Based on an Attribute/I Can Use my Senses.  We have had so many great opportunities to get outside and learn on the land.  It has given us a wonderful opportunity to wa
