June 20-24th  This was a wonderful last full week of learning, creating, discovering and having fun together! This week we spent time honoring National Indigenous History Month and Indigenous Peoples Day as well as Summer Solstice. Our activities included creating a individual organic medicine wheel for each student, learning some blackfoot numbers and sayings, reflecting on the seven sacred teachings and the animals that represent them, making our own winter count representations as well as measuring on the land and enjoying stories and videos. Students also enjoying participating in a math challenge based on the short story called Small Number Counts to 100.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gi0-2-vfh58&ab_channel=SimonFraserUniversity   Question: How did Small Number know that the 100 th tipi is the one just south of his grandparents’ tipi without actually counting them?   June 13 - 17th Wow! June is flying by! We were very fortunate to have an educator from gogreen and CPAWs visit us on Monday for an in school field trip.  We learned about citizen science and how we can make scientific observations in the nature world and submit these to assist the work of professional scientists. Our program also centered on birds in our community of Calgary/Alberta and how we can strengthen our scientific literacy and observation skills and lead to an increase in environmental stewardship.  We also were able to rent their kit (as well as one from the City of Calgary Parks and Rec) for the week and explore the different activities, artifacts and lessons that they had put together both inside and outside. The kits allowed us to get a first hand look at different animals and birds that call our community home and allowed us to work to deepen our observation and documentation skills. While out on our walks this week, students were more mindful of this deepened scientifi

June 6-10 I can make observations about the world around me and the creatures who call the land home. This week during our field trip to Inglewood Bird Sanctuary we learned about pollinators, the process of pollination and explored the sanctuary and learned more about the creatures that call the area home.  I can create using different types of materials. Last week after finding and collecting our rocks we used them to create art along with other natural objects we have around our classroom.

May 30 - June 3rd.  We had a wonderful week together as we entered into the month of June. Here is a snippet of our week.  I can learn on, from and with the land. I can use my senses to be mindful of the world around me. I can make  observations about the world around me and the creatures that call it home.  Prior to our community walk this week, we enjoyed the beautiful book, Everybody Needs a Rock by Byrd Baylor.  We then used this book as inspiration and each student wrote their own rules for finding, choosing and enjoying their own rocks. Here is a sample: We then took our rules and headed out for an afternoon exploring the riverway along the Elbow River and rock collecting and enjoying the surroundings.  This week my group in math have continued our focus on patterns. We were looking at patterns made with numbers and how these patterns can be increasing or growing patterns. Students learned that these types of patterns follow rules such as +1, or +2 and used their knowledge of n
