January 24th - 27th  For a short month we have packed in lots of learning and discovery! This week we focussed on continuing our literacy focus on building reading, phonics and phonemic awareness. In their phonics work students have continued with blends such as cr/fr/dr/gr/fl/cl. Some groups have also been working on long vowel sounds. All students have been working on identifying what are rhyming words and building the understanding that they are word families such as: -at, bat, cat -it, bit, fit, sit  Our focus in writing this week was to understand that a sentence must have a capital, subject, verb(what they are doing) and punctuation. We spent time identifying, writing together and playing games to build a deeper understanding of sentence structure.   I can find 2-D and 3-D shapes in my community.   January 17-21 I can  tell the difference between geographic features in my own community and other communities in Canada. I can represent my learning using different media and resources.  Last week we previewed our project on Building/Representing Landforms. Here are some of the different representations students made to show the different geographical landforms found in Alberta. (Some students are not quite finished - will include more pics next week) I can connect to the land and to others (grade 4/5 class) by participating in nature scavenger hunt. I can use my senses  to explore and understand the world and winter landscape around us.  I can recognize the effects of heating and cooling (Science - Hot and Cold Temperatures) This week we headed out on a walking field trip with a scavenger hunt in our hands and smiles on our faces. Students were thrilled to engage in identifying plants, animals and artifacts on our walk along the river. These scavenger hunts were created /shared by

"Yes the birds don't like those - they make them feel yucky".   "Look at the the ice - why is it different under the bridge? - "Because it is warmer under the bridge." "The bridge shades the ice there." "Why is the ice not frozen there in the middle?" - "Because it is in the open and the wind blows on it." "Because the sun shines on it, there is no shade." "Because the water is deeper and faster there."  "Who made t
