January 17-21

I can tell the difference between geographic features in my own community and other communities in Canada. I can represent my learning using different media and resources.

Last week we previewed our project on Building/Representing Landforms. Here are some of the different representations students made to show the different geographical landforms found in Alberta. (Some students are not quite finished - will include more pics next week)

I can connect to the land and to others (grade 4/5 class) by participating in nature scavenger hunt. I can use my senses to explore and understand the world and winter landscape around us. I can recognize the effects of heating and cooling (Science - Hot and Cold Temperatures)

This week we headed out on a walking field trip with a scavenger hunt in our hands and smiles on our faces. Students were thrilled to engage in identifying plants, animals and artifacts on our walk along the river. These scavenger hunts were created /shared by our grade 4/5 class for us to use and gave us a real focus to our adventure. We also were able to take a look at the difference in the river way over the course of a few days and see how the snow and ice were affected by the cooling and heating of the weather. We will be engaged in some writing and art around our scavenger hunt and other fall/winter walks and will share at a later date. For now here are some photos from this week -

We are very fortunate to have Ms. Yasin support our class with math. She has started working with a small group, and I work with another group. My group has been working on making 10 - or friendly 10. We have also begun some work on subtraction, what it means, how to model the process and recording the number sentence.

This week in math with Ms. Yasin, we reviewed our number bonds to 10 by creating a little math monster with all the bonds to 10 questions we got correct! Then we explored double number facts and practiced drawing some ourselves. We can use these as a mental math strategy!

  1. Wow. Thank you for sharing your incredible learning with us, Room 9 and Ms. Rowland. It's amazing to see your work around landforms and how you were able to complete the scavenger hunts that the Grade 4/5 students created for you.
