March 11th - 16th

The weeks are just flying by in March! We had such a great week together learning, exploring and making connections.

Here is a little snapshot of our week -

Community Walk - we were so very fortunate to have such a beautiful morning yesterday to head out on the land and experience the changes around us. We were very lucky to observe some ducks and geese along the river bank which sparked dialogue into what they were doing, eating and how they maneuver on the ice and water. We also spent time observing natural and manmade shapes in our environment and spent some time critically thinking about some of the purposes for buildings/structures that we viewed as well as analyzing the tree project that is underway on part of the river bank. It was an amazing opportunity to spend time together with our other grade two class learning from the land. Students expressed gratitude for: "time to see nature, to be able to see the ducks close up swimming, being out in the fresh air, the exercise, time seeing the community around us, being able to see the changes of spring."

Science - This week we finished up our Scratch Jr story board project along with our written stories. These will be shared with parents at a later time.

We also finished up our unit on Energy: Light  through a few inquiry based activities where students built a disappearing color wheel spinner. This was a fun way to explore light and physics while learning about Newton's color wheel. We also spent time exploring prisms and lenses to look at how light refracts. Ask your child to explain what these terms mean in relation to light - absorb, reflect, refract.

Social - This week we continued our look at dynamic communities in Canada focussing on Nunavut. Students were tasked with collecting information on different features of this community such as landforms, weather, resources, activities, culture, food through videos and books.

Phonics - this week our focus shifted to prefixes (word parts at the beginning of sentences) such as un- (meaning not) unlucky, unzip. We also covered pre- (before) preview, preheat and re- (back or again) redo, reheat.
High frequency words  - car, mile, night, walk, white, sea, began, grow, took, river.

Math - we continued our look at strategies that build efficiency and fluency in addition and subtraction. This week our focus was on solving subtraction using addition. Students were tasked to  use the relationship between addition and subtraction to calculate differences by solving missing - addend problems using models that lend themselves to an adding on strategy. This also led students to identify and discuss related addition and subtraction sentences, or related facts.

Art: we have been focussing on an artist who used the landscapes of the Northern provinces for inspiration - Ted Harrison. His unique approach to painting northern landscapes with flowing lines and contrast of warm and cool colors provided many opportunities to critically respond to his work and served as inspiration for us to create our own works of art. Look back at our blogs to see more coming soon.

News from Ms Mandin (music) - Grade 1&2:

Our grade 1 and 2  students excelled in music in February. They performed Stephanie Leavell's "K-I-N-D" at our school assembly with great enthusiasm and confidence. Additionally, students worked diligently in class on the rhythm and xylophone parts for our new ensemble pieces "Peter Rabbit" and "Rain on the Green Grass". The dedication and teamwork of the grade 1 and 2 students were evident throughout the month, reflecting their hard work and musical accomplishments.
