January 22-26th We had another super week together in room 9. Here is a glimpse at our week! Math - We continued our focus on the following learning intentions - Composing shapes -  I can put together  2-D  shapes to make other shapes and designs.  Decomposing shapes -  I can see  2-D  shapes inside of other  2-D  shapes. Students created composite shape designs and then had to identify the shapes they used and their attributes.  Literacy -  Phonics - the dipthong (a sound formed by the combination of two vowels in a single syllable) we centered on this week was /oi/ oil, foil /oy/ boy, toy Writing - This week we centered on transitions in writing. We used the transitions, first, next, then, last to map out the story, Snow Day by Ezra Jack Keats. Students then applied this learning to build a Snow Day Story Map using pictures and pathways with codes that matched or emulated the actions from the story. We then put these to the test with the Ozobots!  This week we continued our work on

Students have been engaging in sorting shapes based on their attributes and composing new shapes.  Science - This week we have been continuing on our focus on sound but also have spent time focussing on the interwoven component of our curriculum which is  Computer Science. This component focusses around p roblem solving and scientific inquiry  developed through the knowledgeable application of creativity, design, and computational thinking. This week we explored this through OZOBOTS -   is a smart robot that can   follow lines or roam around freely, detect colors, and can be programmed using visual codes .

January 8-12th Happy New Year! Welcome back, it was so awesome to reconnect and hear about everyone's winter break. Here is an update from Ms Mandin.  Grade 2: Ms Mandin I hope you all had a wonderful winter break and enjoyed the holidays! December was a fantastic month in our music class, with students working hard to learn new skills for the upcoming year. Our grade 2 students challenged themselves this December as they learned to read and play notes on a treble staff.   We continued to work on “Engine, Engine, Number Nine” and "Bell Horses". Students made great progress with these songs by learning to play them on the xylophones. Here is a look at our week together -  Phonics: This week we reviewed /aw/ : au - pause, aw - paw, augh - caught New high frequency words:   between own below country plant last school father keep tree Math - we have been reviewing representing whole numbers with tasks such as below:   Science : Energy: exploring how sounds are made - vibratio
