January 22-26th

We had another super week together in room 9. Here is a glimpse at our week!

Math - We continued our focus on the following learning intentions -

Composing shapes - I can put together 2-D shapes to make other shapes and designs.

Decomposing shapes - I can see 2-D shapes inside of other 2-D shapes.

Students created composite shape designs and then had to identify the shapes they used and their attributes.

Literacy -

Phonics - the dipthong (a sound formed by the combination of two vowels in a single syllable) we centered on this week was /oi/ oil, foil /oy/ boy, toy

Writing - This week we centered on transitions in writing. We used the transitions, first, next, then, last to map out the story, Snow Day by Ezra Jack Keats. Students then applied this learning to build a Snow Day Story Map using pictures and pathways with codes that matched or emulated the actions from the story. We then put these to the test with the Ozobots!

This week we continued our work on developing our bank of describing words by focussing on the cold weather we had experienced the previous week and the snow. As part of this we headed outside for an authentic experience of using our senses to experience the snow and develop our word bank. We also spent time experiencing, creating and building as part of the authentic experience.

Science: This week we focussed on the vocabulary - amplify, dampen and reflect in our sound study. Students used materials to create speakers to text out how to amplify (increase the volume), dampen(reduce sound waves and volume) and reflect (sound waves bounce back).  We also applied all the knowledge they have collected about sound to create their own instruments. Students had loads of fun designing, testing and sharing their instruments.

In addition to creating story maps with pathways and codes for the Ozobots we also created game boards for the ozobots by applying what we had learned about using pathways and codes.
