January 24th - 27th

For a short month we have packed in lots of learning and discovery!

This week we focussed on continuing our literacy focus on building reading, phonics and phonemic awareness. In their phonics work students have continued with blends such as cr/fr/dr/gr/fl/cl. Some groups have also been working on long vowel sounds. All students have been working on identifying what are rhyming words and building the understanding that they are word families such as:

-at, bat, cat

-it, bit, fit, sit

Our focus in writing this week was to understand that a sentence must have a capital, subject, verb(what they are doing) and punctuation. We spent time identifying, writing together and playing games to build a deeper understanding of sentence structure.

I can find 2-D and 3-D shapes in my community. I can identify the name of the shapes.

As a group we headed out to look at all the different shapes that are around our school and our community. Students had fun looking closely at our school and community while identifying different 2-D and 3-D shapes.

I can understand the basic rules of a game. I can show manners and fair play. I can show cooperation and decide to be active. I can persevere when things are difficult.

This week we were very fortunate to have another residency to work with us. This time, First Serve Tennis was here to teach us some basic skills, rules and terminology around tennis. Students had so much fun getting the opportunity to try out their skills of balancing the balls while moving, learning how to throw a ball to a target, some of the different types of swings - forehand and backhand along with returning a ball.

Last week I mentioned that there were a few students who were finishing up there landform representations. Here they are!
