October 19th - 22nd

Our week may have been short but sure was packed with lots of wonderful discovery, adventure and exploration.

Here are some highlights of our week together!

Walking Field Trip: Our walking field trips have been a highlight of our adventures and this week did not disappoint. We headed out with a plan to look for evidence of animals/birds in our community and to see how they are adapting to our seasonal changes. Along with this focus we planned on incorporating our school focus of "Walking for Wenjack" to continue educating and taking steps towards reconciliation. This plan was quickly changed when we were gifted with the opportunity to watch a great horned owl in the community arena. As we watched this majestic bird, students shared information they already knew about these owls, as well many wonderings they had. We will be using this authentic learning experience as a catalyst for future inquiry.

Literacy - We continued our work on developing our predictor skills through examining different stories and short media films. We also continued building on our phonetic and phonemic awareness through various different activities including focusing on the letters G, O and U (short vowel sounds).

Math - number sense, counting collections and patterns were our focus this week.

Loose Parts Play: I can treat others with respect and compassion. I can help others, and work together as a team to build and create. I can share materials. I can include others and invite others to play. I can resolve simple conflict on my own. I can independently help put our materials away.

  1. Dear Room 9,

Thank you for sharing your beautiful learning with us. What a special moment it was for you to observe the owl! I loved seeing the visual journal pages with your sketches, details and labels. You are amazing scientists. Your gratitude leaves came together beautifully. You are all learning so much in Grade One and Two, including how to learn with and from each other. We are proud of you!
