October 23- 27th
We had a cold and snowy week but welcomed the weather as we were very excited to get out and play and learn in the snow!
Here is a look at our our adventures:
Science - We have been learning about our earth and spent time looking at topographical maps of the World, Canada and Alberta and asking ourselves What do you know? What do you wonder? Students began to recognize that different colors on these maps represented land, water and landforms. From there we moved to look at different land forms and bodies of water on earth. We spent time matching vocabulary and pictures to help us become more proficient at identifying landforms. From there we narrowed our focus to landforms in Alberta. Our next step was to build representations of land forms using paper to document their understanding of landforms and bodies of water in Alberta. We also spent time outside in the snow using the land as our medium to create landforms and mini land masses with groups of peers. We loved being out on the land, creating, working on challenges with our peers and were even gifted with the songs and sights of two Downy Woodpeckers enjoying some mid day snacks. Here are some photos of our explorations:
Math - We continued our look at counting and using the hundreds board as a tool to help us build our understanding of numbers and patterns along with the concepts of more and less than as well as even and odd numbers. Students were engaged in games and tasks such as Guess my number, Battleship, building 100 board puzzles, and Number path tasks (that involved students following clues such as +10, - 1 to apply their understanding of how to navigate the 100 board to find the end number).
