November 6-8th

This week we spent time learning about and honoring National Indigenous Veterans Day and Remembrance Day. We learned about the significance of the poppy through John McCrae's  famous poem - "In Flanders Field" and the book - A Poppy is to Remember by Heather Patterson. We also spent time learning about the roles animals played in the military and continue to play today. We spent time creating a wreath of tissue paper poppies to signify our commitment to honor these important events and to show our dedication to peace. As a school, we took part in a very meaningful Remembrance Day assembly which was hosted by our grade 5/6 classes.

This week we also continued our look at numbers and how we could demonstrate our understanding of even and odd numbers. Here is one of the tasks students worked through independently to identify numbers that fit the criteria.

In literacy we continued to focus on r-controlled vowels:
/er/ - mother, herd
/ir/ - bird, shirt
/ur/ - fur, turn
w+ - worm, worth,

We also started our new read aloud book - The Wild Robot by Peter Brown. Through the beginning chapters of this story we have been working on using reading strategies such as predicting, visualizing, and questioning. Students have been documenting their interpretations of the stories through sketches, some including labels and written text.

We also were fortunate to learn about Diwali and the different ways people around celebrate "the festival of lights" from students in our class, books and videos. We enjoyed learning about the art form - rangoli and creating our own representations of these beautiful creations.

I hope that everyone has a wonderful restful fall break and Happy Diwali to all that celebrate!
