October 30 - November 3rd

It was a spooktacular week! Here are a few highlights:

Our week started with a day full of pumpkins, thanks to our parent council,  we were gifted with individual small pumpkins for our day filled with inquiry. Our focus began looking at descriptive words connected to our senses and in small groups we spent time generating lists of adjectives about our pumpkins. Next steps in our pumpkin inquiry were to determine ways to measure our pumpkins. Students used blocks and chain links to measure the height and circumference of their pumpkins, used digital scale to determine how much their pumpkins weighed in addition to a balancing scale to compare their pumpkin to others as well as other materials. From there our next steps were to plan how we wanted to decorate our pumpkins and then dove into creating pumpkin art with our older buddies!

Halloween Activities -

We have continued our focus on building our descriptive vocabulary through stories, games and creative art.  We enjoyed the story, "If You're a Monster and You Know It..." by Donald J. Morrison and used this as a provocation for us to create our own monsters. Stay tuned for the unveiling of these in the near future.

Phonics - this week we worked focussed on r -controlled vowels:
/ar/ - art. card, far
/or/- order, cord, for
/ore/ - store, shore, more

Math :
Number talks are ways to get students involved, use their mental math strategies, work on their ability to explain their thinking  along with their ability to critique or explain other's solutions. Here are a few that we engaged in this week -

News from Ms Mandin:

Grade 2

This month in music, grade 2 has been practicing xylophones! Our focus has been on keeping a steady beat and using proper technique while playing. We even learned to play “Bear Song” by Carl Orff as a percussion ensemble.
