Jan. 29th - Feb. 2nd

We made it through the long month of January and are excited about all the new adventures we will have in February!

Here is a glimpse at our week -

Literacy:

We continued our focus on description and using clear details to explain ourselves. This has been a focus in our work that expands through literacy, science and math the past couple of weeks. We used knowledge of providing clear, succinct language with transitions along with our vocabulary bank to help us write "How to" build a snowman. Have your child give you "how to" directions to complete a job and see if their explanations allow you to successfully complete the task. Here is the outline we used -

This weeks phonics work centered around the dipthong /ou/ - outside, house /ow/ -owl.

Here are the high frequency words we covered -

Math - this week we centered our work around 2-D shapes in motion. This involves a transformation an action or movement of a shape. For example, some transformations result in a different orientation of a shape, for example, slides (translations), flips (reflections), and turns (rotations).

 Slide.       Turn

 Flip

Students practiced analyzing images and creating their own artworks with shapes using these components of shapes in motion. We also incorporated this understanding of the motion of shapes into a game type situation where partners gave step by step directions to their peers to build a copycat composite shape.

Information and Upcoming Dates
-We will be conducting a number of investigations using light over the next couple of weeks and could use some extra flashlights. If you have an extra flashlight (small in size with new batteries) and would be willing to send it to school for your child to use, we would appreciate it. Please make sure you label it prior to sending it with your child and I will store it here at school.

February 14th is Friendship/Valentines Day - students can create friendship cards for their classmates to bring to school on that day. If students are creating cards we ask that they bring one for every peer in their class, we have 23 students in our class. Students do not have to address them to individual students they can just sign their own name.
If students wish to individualize cards our class list is available on our google classroom. Log in using the instructions that were sent home previously in the year.

February 28th - Grade 1/2 sharing assembly. There will be a performance in the morning and afternoon. More details will follow closer to the date.
