May 29 - June 2nd

Where has the time gone?? As we began the last month of the school year we reflected on all the upcoming activities and adventures we had to look forward to as we close off grade 1! *my apologies I do not have as many picture examples this week.

Here is a look at our week:

Literacy:

Phonics: this week we looked at the diagraph - le found at the end of words  -  apple, puzzle, able, giggle. The high frequency words we focused on this week were - name, good, sentence, man, think.

I can use pictures and text to help construct meaning from non-fiction texts that are read aloud and that I read. I can text features that will assist in constructing meaning from non-fiction text. I can find and match information and record in point form under categories.

We have been focusing on the genre of non-fiction and the features of non-fiction text such as labels, pictures, bold words, table of contents. These features help us to understand that when reading these texts we do not have to read the entire text to find information. We have also been learning how to record in jot notes and sketches to assist us in recording information. These skills and are important foundations when researching on non-fiction topics. This past week we have been examining Urban Wildlife texts to learn more about animals/insects that live in our community and then students picked one to start collecting information about.

Science:

We continued our look at the needs of plants and animals and their interdependencies on one another. This included viewing and noting the changes in our bean seeds as well as our caterpillars. We spent time learning about the caterpillars's body parts and their functions as well as the process of changing into a chrysalis. Students were able to view and see these changes as many of our caterpillars transformed into chrysalis this week.

This week on our community walk we focussed in on the plants that grow along our river areas. We spent time focusing on their different features, types and adaptations that they had. Students also spent time documenting these  plants from different perspectives like the back of the flower as well as  plants with thorns.  We will continue our in depth inquiry on plants and animals on our field trip and over the next couple of weeks.
