April 24-28th

Our last week of April was a fantastic one! We were gifted with wonderful weather, amazing learning opportunities and wonderful connections.

I can learn about the needs of different living things. I can identify the lifecycle of different living things.

This week we had a wonderful field trip to the zoo where we were immersed in a program called On Gossamer Wings. In this program students learned how these creatures use their senses to explore the world around them just like we do, compared their life cycles to our own and recognize the impact losing pollinators would be to the environment today.

The rest of the day groups spent time, visiting the different species of living things at the zoo. It was a fabulous day where a great deal of learning and discoveries took place. The following day students were overjoyed when reflecting on the experience and how it influenced their mind, body, spirit and heart. A big thank you to our parent volunteers and to school council for making this field trip possible.

I can take care of my community and contribute to creating a clean, strong environment where all living things will thrive.
Our class participated in a school wide community clean up in honor of Earth Day. We headed up to the community rink/garden area with Ms Paradis' class to clean up garbage and reflect as a large group on our experience. Students felt mixed emotions of happiness, feeling proud, as well as sadness/anger over the amount of garbage and irresponsibility of people who littered in the area.

Phonics: this week we focused on r-controlled vowels specifically -ar.
This is when a vowel is followed by an R, the sound of the vowel often changes and is said to be controlled by the vowel.  There are three main r-controlled vowel sounds:  the /ar/ sound, as in barn; the /or/ sound, as in corn; and the /er/ sound, as in fern, bird, and curl.
The sight words we focussed on this week are: get, come, made, may, part.

Math - this week we continued to work on productive struggle and perseverance within problem solving situations. We examined different strategies that led students to navigate through the following problem.
