March 13-17th

This was another awesome week of discovery, sharing, learning and fun!

Here is a glimpse into our week -

Phonics -
This week we worked on the long /i/ sound. Students learned the silent/magic e tells the a to say its long sound/name in words such as bike, kite, side.
This week we focussed on the following high frequency words - two, more, write, go, see.

I can understand the process of subtraction involves finding the difference or taking away.   I can use pictures to demonstrate subtraction equations and to solve subtraction equations.
This week we started a closer look at the process of subtraction by understanding that it involves taking away from the largest number of objects in a subtraction scenario. Students used the beaded number line and drawing pictures to form an understanding of this process.

Science -
This week we continued our focus on building things and centered our focus on Towers. We determined what we already knew about towers, what we wondered and what we wanted to learn. Next steps were to examine different towers around the world and look at the shapes and determine possible materials that towers were built from. Then we began to build some of our own towers keeping in mind the information that we had just learned.

We also spent time creating leprechaun traps to try to catch our sneaky friend. Students arrived Friday to a find a note and whole lot of mischief in our room. This led us a shared and individual writing project about our morning!

This week was also our last sessions with Monica! We had such an awesome experience creating all the wonderful projects with her. This weeks projects involved assembling our crankies and creating tape/newspaper 3-D puppets..
