February 27 - March 3

We had a busy week prepping for our assembly next week but here are a few things we worked on this week. 

I can use skip counting to count a collection of objects. I can organize a collection and determine the number. 

This week we continued to work on our awareness and understanding of skip counting and how it can apply to our work with counting collections. Students practiced skip counting by 2's, 5's, and 10's starting at different places from 0-100. We then applied this awareness to counting larger collections of objects and students were able to see that organizing objects into groups helps with the efficiency of counting. 



I can understand the process of addition involves joining or adding numbers together to find the sum.  I can use a number line to demonstrate addition equations and to solve addition equations. 
This week we used another tool to continue to develop our fluency and understanding of the process of addition. Students worked on moving a bead on the number line to represent the addends of an equation. 



Phonics - 
This week we worked on the -ed sound. Students learned that -ed is added to verbs to create past tense. They spent time examining the three sounds of -ed which are /d/ as in played, /t/ as in kicked, /id/ as in planted. 
This week we focussed on the following high frequency words - some, her, would, make, like.

March 11th - 16th  The weeks are just flying by in March! We had such a great week together learning, exploring and making connections.  Here is a little snapshot of our week -  Community Walk - we were so very fortunate to have such a beautiful morning yesterday to head out on the land and experience the changes around us. We were very lucky to observe some ducks and geese along the river bank which sparked dialogue into what they were doing, eating and how they maneuver on the ice and water. We also spent time observing natural and manmade shapes in our environment and spent some time critically thinking about some of the purposes for buildings/structures that we viewed as well as analyzing the tree project that is underway on part of the river bank. April 30 - May 3 We had a busy, engaging week filled with discovery, learning and fun! One of the highlights of our week was our field trip to Telus Spark. Our program , "A Perfect Try" challenged students to investigate the properties of materials and relate them to a purpose. Students were challenged to choose materials to build an object that had two purposes - for example build an object that can move from one place to another and can hold something. Students worked together as a group to create these objects while testing the appropriateness of materials through trial and error. This program was a direct tie in to our unit on Matter: Investigating the properties of materials.  Other highlights of our time at Telus Spark included the DaVinci Exhibit, the Space Exhibit, The Creative Kids Museum and of course the Playparks!   In Social we have continued our look at the dynamic community of Nova Scotia with a focus on historic and present community members such as the Acadia...
