November 21 - 24th

I can make Predictions and test my predictions. I can discover the meaning behind surface tension and cohesion. I can mix liquids and discover that liquids have different densities.

Students worked through two different scientific inquiries this week involving liquids. The first experiment involved dropping water droplets on a penny. Students first had to make a prediction on how many droplets would sit on a penny before spilling over and then put their predictions to the test in 3 different trials to determine if they noticed a difference between the trials.

The second experiment involved adding different materials to water (water, food coloring, oil and soap) to observe what would happen. Students discovered that the oil and water separated when added together and then were excited to see how the dish soap affected the mixture.

Students were encouraged to try these experiments at home to show what they have learned.

I Can Add and Decompose Numbers within Twenty and One Hundred.

We have been working on building a strong foundational understanding of numbers up to twenty/one hundred and being able to represent them in different ways.  An important step in our understanding is using base ten blocks to represent numbers.  Using these blocks is a concrete and hands-on way to make connections to the patterns in the number system.  In the coming weeks we will be ramping up our knowledge of numbers and beginning to work with numbers up to 100 for grade ones and numbers up to 1000 for grade twos.

Literacy
In our phonics work -
Group A: has finished reviewing the phonemes of the consonants and short vowel sounds. We have been working on applying our knowledge of these phonemes to read and build CVC words such as cap, map, rot, sap etc.
Group B has continued to work through graphemes such as
ou, ow - out , bow,
oi, oy - oil, boy
au, aw - August, straw
oo, food, u, ew - stew,
u-e, ou, o,-  use , soup,
Group B has also been applying this awareness of these graphemes to games, reading passages and writing words using these graphemes.
