October 24 - 27th

Another week has come and gone as we near the end of October! It is hard to believe that we have been in school 8 weeks already.

Here is a look into some of our daily/weekly activities:

Soft Entry - We usually start our day with either literacy or numeracy tasks which are student choice and range from reading in pairs to math games, building oral stories, and literacy tasks centered around grapheme/phonemes or letter combinations that we have been working on.

This week students had an opportunity to read/write around the room (find sight words hidden around the room, read/ write and use the words in a sentence); matching pictures with beginning sounds, read CVC(consonant/vowel/consonant) words, and find the picture and record word; draw and label pictures of Fall related items, roll and read words .

Letter Work:

In the past number of weeks we have works on the following letter/sounds -

Group A : s, a, t, i, m., p, o, n,  b, c, g, d, e, r, h, f, k, l, v, u, j

Group B: sh, ch, th, ck, ng; silent e vowels (eg. i_e, a_e);

Math:

I can make a reasonable estimate based on what I know. I can count larger numbers and use a tool such as a hundred chart to assist me in my counting and recording. I can measure using non standard units. I can use terms such as heavy, light, height and width. i can use my senses to describe an object and to assist me with sketching an object.

This week we have been practicing making a reasonable estimate of a number. This is an approximate calculation of a number before we count the actual number. We then put this skill to use in our pumpkin investigation. Students explored  pumpkins in a mathematical sense to determine how many lines were on the pumpkin, how many blocks tall their pumpkins were, how many links around their pumpkins. We also used these pumpkins as still life objects to sketch, to build up our descriptive word bank and we also learned about their lifecycle.

Halloween

This year we will be having some Halloween activities on October 31 in classrooms. Students will be able to dress up if they wish. Please remember weapons are not permitted at school.

Students will be having a costume parade to share their costumes with others during the morning and  classes will be planning some Halloween activities during the day.

 Due to food allergies, please do not send treats to share with others.
