Welcome Grade 1 and 2 to our learning community (room 9)!

I am very excited to welcome you to our class family and was so happy to connect with most of you and start to get to know all of you and your families. I am looking forward to building our on sense of belonging and community along with exploring and discovering new and amazing learning with all.

Here are a couple of photos of our classroom - we will build on this space as we go and create a space that is ours.

The first day we explored a book titled, First Day Jitters by Julie Danneburg. This book gave us a starting point to explore our emotions and to build on the understanding that emotions are natural and to develop emotional literacy. Students were given the opportunity to share how they were feeling about the first day of school as well as to contribute to building a class pictograph. The shared graphing task was a natural way to build in some counting, counting on and addition challenges.

We also used the book, Our Class is a Family by Shannon Olsen for our work around building our sense of belonging and community. We discussed what makes a family and students were given an opportunity to share what they could do to make everyone feel like they were part of the community. We all created a self-portrait to add to a class display.

As part of creating our own sense of belonging we also created name tags, personalized our own pencil cases, participated in circle to share our names and learned a version of rock, paper scissors with the phrase - "My name is!"

We had a busy and wonderful start to our new school year!
