March 28-April 1st

We had a great week back together after break, and were so lucky to have wonderful spring weather.

Here is a look at some of the learning and experiences we shared this week:

I can interpret and explain how seasons change living things.  I can make observations of the world around me.

Our walking field trip provided us with the opportunity to view many changes in our community in relation to changes in the season. Students are becoming very conscientious of experiencing our walking field trips with open eyes, ears, minds and hearts. We were able to experience and take in a number of different types of evidence of spring from the footprints of birds, the chatter/call of ground squirrels and brief sightings of the ground squirrel, buds on trees, pussy willows, the diminished ice and slow, shallow flow of the river and wood ducks enjoying the river. Along our walk, we paused to document what we were experiencing by completing a 4 direction sketch of the features in those directions.

I can show cooperation within large and small groups.
On Friday we had the opportunity to join our buddy class for recess and outdoor play time. This was an awesome way to learn one another's names and spend time together in an unstructured time of fun. Students enjoyed playing soccer, tag and just being together with other members of our school community.

I can use different strategies when adding.

My math group focused on the strategy of doubles plus one. Doubles plus 1 is a strategy used to add two consecutive numbers that is, when they are next to each other. We simply add the smaller number twice or double it and then, add 1 to it, to get the final result.

With Ms. Yasin this week in math, students reviewed and solidified addition strategies using mental math. Students reviewed number pairs to 10, doubles and making friendly numbers. Then students began practicing place value addition, which requires numbers to be split up into their tens and ones parts. Then the tens are added together, and the ones are added together. Students can use this mental math strategy to quickly add larger numbers together!

Just a reminder that next week we will be participating in our dance residency with 3 Left Feet.
Students are encouraged to dress in light comfortable clothing appropriate for physical activity along with inside running shoes.
