I can find and group information to match establish categories

This week we put our knowledge of non-fiction text features, how to organize info into a web and the use of jot notes to work and began a little research project on pollinators. Students chose one of 4 pollinators (Bee, Bat, Ladybug or Hummingbird) to research and either worked in a small group or on their own to find information on their chosen topic. Students were challenged with the task of signing into our chrome books, navigating to get onto google and epic books. Students used epic books to listen to & read books and watch short videos to collect information on their pollinator. We were very pleased to see students rise to the challenge and work together to navigate through some problem solving and to apply what they know to read and navigate through non-fiction texts.

I can learn from the land and appreciate what the land provides.

This week our intention was to go out and complete a community clean up and explore to find more evidence of spring, but Mother Nature had a different idea! Instead we went out and Na'a (Mother Earth) provided us with a huge dump of snow to examine, discuss and explore. This fresh snow provided us with the opportunity to build on our vocabulary of words to describe snow, sleet and water as well as to explore the different properties of water (I can describe the properties of water and other liquids. I can understand the importance of water for living things.) It also gave us the opportunity to build and create art using the medium of snow. Students enjoyed the challenge of creating different designs and used tools (their own bodies) to write and leave prints in the snow. Then they moved onto the challenge of using the building blocks of snow to build and work together as a team to build a snow creation.

My math group continued to work through developing their understanding of place value and representing numbers. This involved building the understanding that the number 27 = 2 tens and 7 ones or 27= 20 + 7.

This week in math with Ms. Yasin, students extended their learning of adding double digit numbers. Students have learned how to add double digit numbers by using the place value or decomposition method, where both numbers are broken up into their tens and ones value and added once again with the ones together and then the tens together. This week students extended that learning by exploring the standard algorithm (or stacking) strategy for addition. Students found it helpful to use a line in their algorithm to visually separate their ones and tens. Students were able to transfer their conceptual knowledge from other strategies into this concise strategy for addition. We will have more practice with this method next week!
Some key take aways from this week's lessons were:
to make sure we are adding the ones column in the algorithm method first, and then the tens.
Music Update
Grades 1-6 were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to view the Opera The Brothers Grimm performed by Calgary Opera.  This was a free virtual performance we watched during music time.  We did have a few students away and a few wanted to share it with their families.  I have attached the link which is live until April 29th at 6:00PM.  Please feel free to view it.  The program is about 50 minutes.  We will be doing follow up activities in music class next week around this performance.  If you have any questions please don't hesitate to email me.
