February 7-11th-

This week was another awesome one packed with activities, learning and super weather.

Here is a glimpse into our week:

I can Identify similarities or differences between cultural traditions and communities.

Under the leadership of the grade 4/5 and 5/6 classes, we spent time this week learning about Carnaval de Quebec, which gave us some insight into the Winter Carinival such as where it takes place, activities and origins. We also learned about how maple syrup is made and sugaring off. We were fortunate to be able to take part in games set up by the older students as well as to have a tasty maple treat from the Sugar Shack. Thank you very much to the grade 4/5 and 5/6 classes for this wonderful learning experience.

I can create narratives with structure and detail.

This past week we took our story maps and created a story that included a beginning, middle and end. Our focus was to pay close attention to writing complete sentences with capitals and punctuation as well as to convey our thoughts in a sequence that made sense to the reader. Students were very proud of their stories and enjoyed sharing them with their peers.

I can show my understanding of addition and subtraction of numbers up to 20.

My math group continued to focus on number bonds and how the numbers in number bonds are related. We engaged in practice of finding the missing numbers in a number bond  as well as creating number equations/sentences to represent our understanding of addition and subtraction situations. We used different manipulatives such as dominos to help assist us in this learning.

In math with Ms. Yasin this week students worked on refining their doubles facts using doubles games. Students then continued to work with the doubles plus one strategy for mental math. Ten frames and dominos were very helpful in visualizing this strategy. The math group ended the week by learning how we can expand our doubles knowledge to doubles minus 1 and doubles plus two! Everyone worked so hard this week!

Here are a few pictures of our Tape Resist masterpieces we made a while back - students really enjoyed creating the base of their art work by adding tape to their paper, then selecting their colors to paint the paper. After it dried they carefully pulled the tape off to reveal the contrast between the colors as well as the shapes they created.
