February 1-4

A brand new month always means new and exciting things to look forward to! Here is a reminder of some of the events coming up -

8 – Winter Carnival (Cabane a Sucre) - the grade 4/5 & 5/6 classes will be leading us through activities as well as an opportunity to have a tasty treat from the Sugar Shack

14 – Valentine’s Day – Healthy Heart Day  ** Students will be encouraged to create Valentine's or kindness cards for their classmates. We ask that if students are creating cards that they make one for all their peers in their class. We will exchange cards on Monday, February 14th. Students will be bringing home a list of their peers names early this week.

15 – Virtual Anti-Bully Magic Show

23 – Pink Shirt Day

I can recognize the effects of heating and cooling and identify methods for heating and cooling. (Hot and Cold Temperature)

This week we explored how to read a thermometers and how to relate the temperatures on a thermometer to our outside weather and liquids such as water and warm and cold drinks. We discussed how extreme temperatures can affect our bodies as well as how we would adapt to different temperature. This also tied in to the temperature changes we were experiencing outside and how animals in our community adapt to these changes. Part of our exploration involved measuring temperatures of water in different states such as warm water, room temperature water, cool water and cold water and ice. We also were able to explore how long it took water to freeze when placed in very cold outside temperatures and create some predictions based on our learning.

I can Identify similarities or differences between cultural traditions and communities.
On Monday we had fun learning about Lunar New Year, its different traditions, customs and food along with the lunar calendar and the animals associated with each year.

My math group this week continued to work on addition and subtraction and how they are are related. As part of this learning we have been focussing on number bonds which are pairs of numbers that can be added together to make another number e.g. 4 + 6 = 10. They are some of the most basic and most important parts of maths for children to learn.

This week in math groups with Ms. Yasin, students reviewed the mental math strategy of using doubles to solve problems. Hit The Button was their favorite game! Students extended their learning by exploring "doubles plus one" as a math strategy. Dominos helped visualize what doubles plus one looks like. Students used this knowledge to sort dominos based on if they could see doubles, doubles plus one, a number bond to 10, or none of those on the domino.
